A couple of days ago I found this hour long lecture on youtube entitled Achieving Your Childhood Dreams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo .
From the video blurb:
Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch (Oct. 23, 1960 - July 25, 2008) gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving presentation, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals.

It's got some fantastic sound bites, which normally annoy me, but it's done in a way which doesn't in this case.
Two quotes I like are:
When you're screwing up and no-one's saying anything to you anymore, that means they gave up.
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

They sound trite when taken out of context like that but the lecture is wonderfully inspiring.

This has made me think about my 101 in 1001 list. I've neglected to update that, but I have made occasional progress. Admittedly not as much as I'd like to have made, but I'll post an update at some point before my deadline (which is November 16th this year - eep) but also when I have more time to write instead of when I should be in bed.

Note to self before I go to bed: I want to write a post about teaching / lecturing / learning.

g'night

Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug and [livejournal.com profile] bethanthepurple met me at work and we caught up. [livejournal.com profile] bethanthepurple then went her own way so [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug and I went off to a restaurant that we'd booked earlier in the break. The restaurant was called Dans Le Noir. This place has the dining area in complete darkness with blind waitstaff. Before entering the darkroom (fnar!) you choose the type of meal you want (meat, fish, veg) and then you enter. The dish served is a surprise. They tell you what you had when you leave the dark room.

I was given rare beef on a bed of noodles with pak choi and brocolli. I "identified" the meat correctly but the veg as fennel and carrots. I'd not had pak choi before so this is another veg to add to my 101 in 1001 list (item 91). I got the brocolli wrong, I think, because it was headless and the stalks were served as slices, in the way that carrots often area.

It was a really fun experience. The first thing I remember when entering the dining area is that when I had sat down I felt incredibly dizzy. It went after 5 minutes or so though. It was culturally weird too because normally when dining out you'd make eye contact or perhaps wave to catch a waiter's attention. Naturally this wouldn't work with blind staff, let alone in a darkroom so beforehand we were introduced and when dining called out to one other by name. We were guided to our seats conga fashion, by placing our hands on the shoulder of the person in front and following.

I had no idea how big the place was but as best I could work out it was set out as two long tables about 10 feet apart and 20 feet long. It did mean that we were sat next to other dining couples but it wasn't too instrusive. (Except for the noisey group of 14 on the other long table. grr).

Well worth a visit, especially if you like the element of surprise in your food.

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Knitted an item of clothing (end of August 2007) - it was a hat. I've not worn it since; instead I've made better ones - using higher quality yarn and in stripes.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Didn't make any. I won't make any more (until November).I'm doing the 101 tasks in 1001 days thing, and my current set expires then.

One of the items on my 101 in 1001 list is to have a knitting sesion in Slimelight. I meant to post about this before, but having spoken with people about it and raised some interest, we've decided to have this tomorrow. [livejournal.com profile] bluehelen is in search of UV-reactive wool, and I'll be bringing a few sets of spare needles. Who's up for it?

ION, I hear news of a one-off UK Placebo gig on March 7th at Elephant&Castle, but AFAICT all tickets have sold out. Ebay is stupidly extortionate and I'm not sure I'd like to pay in excess of 50 quid for a ticket. I'm on the lookout for at least 1 ticket, but it's probably a lost cause.

flist spam ftw.
I've made a bit of progress with my 101 in 1001 list in recent weeks, but haven't got around to posting yet due to work being insanely busy and moving house (which is an item in itself, or rather 2 items, I'm pleased to say)

13. Do some private tuition
I'd actually done this a few months ago but hadn't got around to marking it off. I've done private KS3 tuition for a guy in Highbury, IT office admin for a friend's mum and also remote coaching in computer science for [livejournal.com profile] megashrike.

19. Have bought a house
This has to be one of the biggest achievements of this year. It's my place and I can trash it if I want to. Finally a place of my own that I can decorate in my own way, and eventually get a cat. (That's an item too, but hasn't happened yet so I can't mark it off)

20. Move to somehwere bigger
This follows on from 19, but I included it in case I only managed to move somewhere that I was renting rather than going the whole hog and purchasing.

46. Have a candlelit dinner
The meal in Garlic and Shots was candlelit, so this counts.

62. Host/attend a themed party
My brother's 30th birthday 2 weeks ago had a dress code of "Something beginning with the first letter of your first name". I won't say what I went as yet - I'll get the photos uploaded so you can laugh at me in another post

71.Throw out at least of two boxes of crap that seem to keep following me around when I move house
I did this whilst packing before the move, so it was around 9th December.

73. Create my personal website
I've done this - it's my surname followed by either .com or .co.uk. I'd rather not post the full domain name here as it's a public post.

91. Try at least 5 new fruit or vegetables
Last night I tried celeriac and liked it. I'll upload a recipe at some point - it's not hard but it'd be useful for reference.

I'll come back at some point when I have more time and find out the exact dates. Not that many of you will care that much, but I'd like to add it for completeness

Today:
Today was the 100th anniversary (to the day) after the baptism of St John Betjeman, Poet Laureate from 1972. It was from his poem Slough whence the subject of this post comes. St Anne's in Highgate was one of his favourite churches, and to commemorate there was a special service with ringing afterwards.

Then I went to Archway Cat Shelter with one of the other rings who was a cat lover. I spent almost 2 hours there and provisionally picked a couple for the house. I let the people know there that it would be dependent on the move happening as planned (a post about that to come, probably tomorrow). As fate would have it, when I called [livejournal.com profile] immiscibility to tell her the news and of my choice, she mentioned she would have gone for those cats too, so *fingers crossed*

Tomorrow:
A few days ago [livejournal.com profile] mrk told me about an exciting opportunity near my house-to-be. There's a nearby church with bells and a gorup of willing learners, but noone to teach them. They're looking for someone, and I've been volunteered (I don't mind this - it's something I'd actively like to do - see item 81 ). My reason for mentioning this is that tomorrow is the demonstration, just to maintain enthusiasm and let them know what it's all about.

* * *

Off out now to [livejournal.com profile] bluehelen's housewarming, and if circumstances permit, to sort out the 'Net access there.
I just found a bug in either my journal style, or part of the public one - tags are not shown on the preview page. I shall hunt it down and squish it later; it's been far too long since I last poked the LiveJournal internals.</geek>
mattp: (lj)
Some progress at last!
18. Stop biting my nails
I wasn't making a conscious effort to do this. I noticed at the end of the week when [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug was visiting that I hadn't bitten my nails all week, and haven't since.
Back when I was living in Manchester I tried for a while though at some point slipped back into the habit. This has been long enouigh such that my nails are long enough to break and get caught on things, so I think it finally counts.

64. Pay off my credit card debt
I did this on August 14th, but forgot to write about it. It meant wiping out a savings account, but the interest was massive.

98. Walk to town from home. (I'll maybe settle for Camden rather than the city centre)
I walked home from Centre Point, Tottenham Court Road on Saturday evening. I gave myself a blister though, so will be hobbling for a couple of days.

See http://matthewp.livejournal.com/209880.html for the full list.
There are a couple more to add, but I'd like to wait until I can confirm the dates before posting them as complete.
mattp: (Default)
Oops. I seem not to have updated for several weeks. I am still alive and, for the most post, I have still been reading and commenting.

I'll drop in some backdated entries at some point, once I've finished writing them up as quite a lot has happened.

My new job is going well and I've been making a good impression, or so it seems. Mid last week I fixed a bug which had existed for about 2 years, but was well hidden and didn't occur very often, hence it remaining undiscovered for so long.

Whilst I'm on my lunch break and without copious free time, I'll write about last weekend.
Saturday was a wedding in the afternoon. I'd not rung for a wedding for a long time, and the London rates were a pleasant surprise :-) Paid for my night out, which was a pleasant chilled evening in the Dev making a detour via Wagamamamamamamama.

Once again discovered that it is a very small world, with [livejournal.com profile] kittygoth knowing both [livejournal.com profile] bitty and [livejournal.com profile] martling.

Sunday I visited my Mum and had a belated birthday dinner with her in the form of a BBQ, thus completing item 44 (Have a barbecue) on my 101 in 1001 list.
mattp: (Default)
I haven't yet written about the kite festival. [livejournal.com profile] mrk and I went headed over to Streatham after Sunday service ringing at church. The weather was disappointingly poor, though we at least managed to fly the kite for about 10 minutes.

Wandered around the stalls and stayed maybe 2 hours, then headed home. I'm waiting for a windy day so I can take it out and fly it for a prolonged period.

Anyway, it means I've completed another task on my 101 in 1001 list:
77. Fly a kite
mattp: (Default)
I met up with [livejournal.com profile] kelemvor on Saturday afternoon, as he was checking the area out for forthcoming work events. We had lunch in the nearby Coronet pub which despite being only a few hundred yards down the road I'd still not been in. Very much an old man's pub, but nice enough.

I accomplished two (well, one and a bit) things on my 101 in 1001 list today.

The partial one is:
91. Try at least 5 new fruit or vegetables - I tried fresh papaya from the local market. I didn't like it - it was too bland and not sweet enough for my palate.

The completed one is
67. Write a Wikipedia article from scratch
[livejournal.com profile] duranorak - this one will probably be of interest to you. The article was A list of albums containing production errors. Unlike the other link I posted for you, it won't break you :-)

Sorry for not posting for ages. I am still here, and I have still been reading. I've spent much of this evening poking in a few backdated entries for the tail end of March detailing what I've been doing in recent weeks. Many contain photos, and as such I've created a useful tag: http://matthewp.livejournal.com/tag/photos for if you want to look over them.

I might write a book / Hand feeding squirrels - http://matthewp.livejournal.com/214472.html
Sigur Ros gig - http://matthewp.livejournal.com/213972.html

Going back to my 101 in 1001 list, I guess that based upon those latter entries, I can also tick off
69. Get into the habit of taking more photos

London Eye

Another couple of tasks from my 101 in 1001 list.

I wrote about it, but forgot to mark it as one of the items.
Meeting [livejournal.com profile] lost_sincerity on Friday completes item 84. Meet in person someone I know online but not f2f

42. Go on the London Eye
Last Sunday I went on the London Eye with [livejournal.com profile] stephmog, [livejournal.com profile] poggs and [livejournal.com profile] alexmog. I was initially a bit apprehensive but whatever trace of vertigo I had seems to have gone. This one is taken at almost the peak:
cut for those who have vertigo )

My next trick is to convince my sister to come along, though I dubt that will happen for a while :-)
We also wandered around the south bank and I got photos of some of the performers there.

Being the fool that I am, I forgot to charge the battery on my camera and it died part way up, though I got a photo of Parliament and St Stephen's tower (the one that houses Big Ben). I made a userpic out of it which I'll be using for political rants - there's one of those coming up, as it happens.

A fun, but exhausting delay finishing off with a slow journey home due to tube delays and closures.

The pics link to the gallery of the day out

29. Upload photos from old CF cards
I uploaded most of these yesterday - you can see them at [http://pics.livejournal.com/matthewp]. I've not put captions on them yet, but will be doing that as and when I can be bothered. Some of the photos date back to 2004 - they were quite overdue :-)

There's one CF card still to find; it's in a box somewhere but now that I'm in a small flat there isn't the room to have everything out.

* * *

Late last night, as hunger was creeping up on me, I had cravings for tabouleh. My cupboards were getting bare so I took a trip to the Sainsbury's in Camden at 2330 ish. Reminds me of when I lived near the Portwood Tesco which was open 24 hours. Late night shopping is so much more preferable. The morrisons near me is far too small for the amount of people that seem to want to try to use it. SHopping there is such an unpleasant experience, especially between 1700 and 1830.

Strange music courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] markslut.

On Friday night [livejournal.com profile] mrk called me up wanting to meet up, and I ended up heading round his place. We snacked on pizza and watched "Executive Decision". It makes such a pleasant change to have a social evening that isn't going out to the pub.

On Saturday we went to the science museum, thus completing item number 45.. It's a huge place and it was quite tiring so I didn't get to see a lot. I'd like to go again if anyone fancies it? ([livejournal.com profile] kelemvor - you showed some interest).

Whilst in town we popped into Harrods. The signing there isn't excellent, but I still found a couple of things of interest. I got a 4x4x4 rubik's sube (to go with my 3x3x3 and 5x5x5 ones), and also some carraway seeds that I was missing when cooking a couple of weeks back. When I got home I realised that I'd picked up cardamons in error. D'oh. Happily the Sainsbury's I went in last night had some.
mattp: (Default)
I've been thinking recently about the goals on my 101 in 1001 list, and these are the ones worth mentioning at the moment.

Number 42: - Ride the London Eye
On Sunday 12th March, I'll be going on the London Eye with [livejournal.com profile] stephmog and anyone else we can entice along. Who wants to join us?

Number 69: - Take more photos
I have been taking more photos recently, and last night I copied them from my CF card. I'll upload them shortly. I just need to keep in the habit; it's very easy to get behind.
mattp: (Default)

Seen on [livejournal.com profile] stephmog's journal, but the idea seems to have originated from someone calling themself Triplux.

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
rest of description )

My deadline is Sunday, November 16th 2008

Academic / Qualifications:
1. Gain my PPL
2. Gain my CBT
3. Go on a first aid course
4. Regain skills in German
5. Pass stage 2 BSL
6. Learn hypnotism
7. Using the above, cure or abate someone's phobia (current target is my sister's vertigo and associated fear of flying)
8. Learn to cook a curry
9. Learn 50 new words
10. Take another advanced driving course
Rest of list beneath here )

Ok, so I've copied a few from other lists I've seen, but I view this as an excercise in achievement, not one of creativity.

Who else wants to join me in this quest?
