I finally have the referral date - it's next week at St Thomas hospital.

It's closely becoming a likelihood that it'll all go ahead. Though I'm excited, truth be told I'm a little intimidated by the idea. But it's something I've been wanting to do for years, am I'm thoroughly looking forward to it.

Huh, typical. Not that I'm complaining...Just as I start applying for jobs, Project Flying starts to take off. I'm still going to be looking for work but I have just had a call from my GP saying that the PCT have agreed to fund the referral, and hence the appointment will be made and I'll hear from them soon with an appointment date (which probably won't be for a few weeks). So I'm still considering a private appointment. I'll call them and ask about the possibilities once I have the details.

She has also written me a "it's not affected him for >25 years" style letter for the second medical issue (which hasn't affected me since I was 5, but I still needed to declare it). Once I receive that I shall forward it to the CAA.

Despite the fact that this second issue is smaller, it was the one I was more worried about because it was so long ago and I wasn't sure about what documentation would be available. But my GP said that the fact that it no longer required treatments and that I'd not no episodes for 2-plus decades should be sufficient.

It is with much sadness that I must announce Project Flying is temporarily on hold. As some of you know, I have a non-trivial medical history.

A few weeks back, I had the medical examination with the Aviation Medical Examiner. He said that though I passed each of the basic criteria, he didn't know enough about NF to sign off a pass and so issued a deferment, pending more information. Frustrating, but understandable.

A couple of weeks later, I receive the letter from the CAA detailing the extra information needed. (He'd told me himself what was needed but I chose to wait so that I had it in their own words). I was then able to book an appointment with my GP (which I've since had), and she was then be able to arrange for a referral. The problem with that is the nearest specialist place is in a different PCT to my own so my PCT is likely to be unwilling to release the money.

So in summary, it is going ahead - it is not cancelled (and likely won't be unless the CAA are excessive twunts) - but no progress will be made whilst I endure PCT politics.

Writing this has given me an idea, but it does go against my principles somewhat. I am a big fan of the NHS, even with their failings. I am considering arranging a private consultation so that I am not at the mercy of waiting lists and PCT wrangling.

Further to this: http://mattp.livejournal.com/267143.html

I quit my job today. I don't have a new job lined up. I am going to do something that I have been thinking about for ages - only now do I have the time to do it. I am going to complete training for my pilot's license. I don't wish to fly for a profession; it would be purely recreational. I told people at work this and they were generally supportive.

I have set myself a target of the end of the year. Yes, it was one of my 101 in 1001 tasks, but that kind of fell by the wayside somewhat. I haven't even made the summary post about that. bad matt.

I admit that it's a bit of a risk but I figured that keeping a license current is relatively easy; traing to e of the required standard in the first place is hard enough when I have a job. In a couple of years time I may not have this freedom. So I'm taking a calculated risk for an opportunity which may not present itself again.

Nervous, but excitedly so.

For reasons of professionalism, I protect my work-related posts from anyone with whom I work or have worked. But this one is different enough that I am making it open. I have screened comments though

Hier stell' Ich screiben weil Ich soll etwas essen.

Last Thursday saw the fantastic Lilith Vile play in the Witchwood. This was a fantastic gig, and I was glad to have finally made it to that venue after hearing so much about it. The music was fabulous; I'd only ever previously heard solo demos, so the sounds were a lot richer than I'd previously heard.

In geek news, I see LiveJournal have now enabled tagging of entries. I've gone through my journal and tagged everything from mid 2002 onwards. Got bored though - shall do the rest some other time.

Hmm. Coming up to the end of June already. It'll be my birthday before I know it. (July 24th) I've no plans so far - is anyone interested in doing something? I'm completely open to suggestions: an event in Manchester, in London, Berlin or somewhere else? It'll be sometime over the nearest weekend rather than the day itself

You stupid moaning bint. Why not try going shopping WHEN THEY'RE ACTUALLY OPEN? ahem

I'm working in Aberdeen on Wednesday and Thursday, and in Southampton on Friday. At least I'm flying to Aberdeen - otherwise I think the drive would have killed me.

Just got back from week 3 out of 4 for this RT course I'm on for flying. It's been going very well and the exam is next week.

Yesterday:
Went to the Garden of Delights this evening with housemate Simon, and finally met [livejournal.com profile] lyra after several weeks of journal comments and MSN conversations. Met up with [livejournal.com profile] paul and soon after foundh [livejournal.com profile] dineleeeee and some of his friends. Saw Gordon who I'd not seen for the best part of a year. The ents there were absolutely fantastic. I so wish I'd taken photos. [livejournal.com profile] lyra, it was fab to finally meet you.

Today:
Flying lesson was moved to midday with normal instructor and it went very well once again. Was in a different craft this time, one which was much more twitchy and sensitive but I think I preferred it. It's all coming together very well and I'm doing things automatically now rather than having to think about them, and this has been the case 3 lessons running, so I'm ecstatic about it all.

Then went over to see [livejournal.com profile] shinydan, [livejournal.com profile] flirtydaz, [livejournal.com profile] sainymaryuk, [livejournal.com profile] welshlad and a few others whose LJ names I don't know, for [livejournal.com profile] welshlad's birthday.

Am away in Lincs, Sussex, London, Midlands and London next week so will be clocking up lots of miles and sadly be missing [livejournal.com profile] biphoria. Saturday will see a BBQ at [livejournal.com profile] faerierhona's place, and flying again on Sunday.

Burn the candle at both ends? Nah, s'not my style, gov.

Relaxing, yet busy. I went flying on both Saturday and Sunday which was great after a 7 week hiatus. Both lessons went very well, so much so that my instructor said it won't be long before I can think about going solo.

Watched Eurovision, for my sins, and as expected it was full of clearly political voting. I was hoping for NorwayWogan's sarcasm was fantastic; at times I really did wonder if it was the acts or the event itself he was ripping.

Sunday after flying went to Dan's place for an afternoon of gaming which was excellent fun.

I really must sort myself out a diary or PDA. Hmm - a thought. I have a Palm m500 somewhere though stopped using it because I found Grafitti to be too slow to be practical. I understand there's a FITALY keyboard (software, I think) available which would help speed things up.

Saturday:
Woke up feeling much happier. Had a flying lesson again and covered the secondary controls (flaps, power and trim) and even took off. Not bad for a 2nd lesson. (Well, technically 5th, but the other 3 were 10 years ago).
I'm axious to learn about the navigation side of things, though I guess that will have to wait until I've managed to get the hang of the flying-the-plane bit before worrying about the theory.

In the evening was the big social party after Charl and Lel's commitment ceremony. It was wonderful. I'm so happy for you both, and you have incredibly good looking friends ;-) Fantastic to catch up with people and special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] softfruit and [livejournal.com profile] snagglepat.
Sauciness of the night involved about a dozen of us baring our tops. Tame, I know. Maybe I should post a quiz asking "Guess whose nips" :-) Fear not, I shall acquire permission before using any photos taken.

Oh, the other thing: when I arrived I was stopped by someone in the bar who recognised me from the documentary. He told me his story (which I'll not share here), but it was great to know that I'd given some other people hope. UNtil then I hadn't really given much thought about how I came across.

Sunday:
Did nothing much, but I did download the documentary as I didn't have a complete recording of it. I shall shortly be getting that put onto DVD along with a BBC documentary shown earlier last week also on Nf just to broaden the scope a little. Anyone want a copy?

Depsite having a shitty week, I had a rather good weekend.

For once, the weather was not against me and I managed to have a flying lesson. I took [livejournal.com profile] dineleeeee and [livejournal.com profile] scrumpyncheese with me to the aviation viewing park and a number of photos were taken. It was a bitterly cold day,but I was wrappedup warmfor the flight. It was fantastic, and I can't wait to go again this weekend. Themost surprising thing was the low takeoff speed.I had thought it would be in excess of 100mph, but we took off at around 70kts. I startedhaving lessons 10 years ago and though my practical skills had dropped off, I remembered alot of the theoryso we covered quite a lot of content, ending up with spin recovery.

Sunday was a curry at myfavourite place with members of The Geek House and it was as excellent as their usual standard. I also managed to find someone to write the program I mentioned a while back, so that was productive.

[livejournal.com profile] mhw: I introduced a few more people to In C by Terry Riley. It's become one of my favourite contemporary pieces of music.

Got home far too late, bearing in mind that I was due in Herts. the following morning. That would have been a two day job, but I managed to complete in one so headed home.

On Monday, the documentary was shown. I skipped most of it though, due to self consciousness :-/ I got a load of phonecalls from various people and didn't get off the phone properly until midnight. Thanks for you rcompliements, everyone. Yesterday I spoke with some of the crewto catch up with them and let them know that I enjoyed working with them and liked the final result. I'm going to miss them, and am looking forward to when I can next head to London and play catch-up.

Busy yet productive day at work, so I ought to press on.

I realy need to start coming up with imaginative subjects. Not least so I can find posts when searching through comment email. Unless anyone knows of any decent email indexing and searching solutions for Linux?

A friend of my two housemates that I vaguely knew in halls of residence at uni has been over for the weekend. I decided to cook dinner. I roasted veg for the first time which may not sound like much but I've only ever used the hob for cooking, so it was quite an achievement.

recipe beneath )

Later in the evening I went to [livejournal.com profile] jillys with [livejournal.com profile] softfruit. It was a surpriseing quiet night for a Friday, but I did manage to see [livejournal.com profile] neuromantix (welcome to my flist :-)), [livejournal.com profile] msbhayvin, [livejournal.com profile] db85 and Jay.

Saturday I was going to go flying for my first lesson after a 10 year hiatus, but the poor weather prevented it. Had 2 hours of ground school instead. Watched QL all evening and made it through to the final episode.

Today I have another booking for a lesson, but having just checked the weather I don't think it'll happen.
METAR weather report )

No plans afterwards, though maybe I should tidy my room and do some laundry, as the place is a sty.
