Seen on [livejournal.com profile] stephmog's journal, but the idea seems to have originated from someone calling themself Triplux.

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past - frequently simple goals such as new year's resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Some common goal setting tips:

  1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.
  2. Stay Focussed. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.
  3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.
  4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.
  5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.

That's such a brilliant idea! Setting goals and deadlines is the only way I ever get things done. Must go off and think about my goals...

I'm always up for a trip to the Science Museum, if you want company.
Also, Dad's looking for someone to rehome his kitten before he moves into retirement accommodation - pictures here.

Good luck!

Based upon your other posts he'll be moving too soon. I'd like to be in either a house or a ground floor flat, and the rental contract would have to permit pets. Sadly neither applies at the moment.

Science musuem, OTOH, is easily doable. http://my.calendars.net/mattp/ is my current social calendar. March looks free, but I vaguely recall something happening on the 11th.

It's a pain about rental agreements, or I'd probably rehome her. :\

I can fit a trip in pretty much at any time. THe only thing I've found in recent years is that social arrangements are like buses - feast and famine. But yes, just prod me a week or so in advance of public geekery!

I didn't know you were a knitter!

If you ever want someone to teach you I am in London alot and I spin too (using a spinning wheel) This may also be of interest...

London, England (Queer SnB): http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/queer_stitchandbitch

I have been meaning to try and go forever. Oh, and if you ever have a knit-in at Slimelight, lemme know! I will come and bring my partners (who also knit sometimes)

I never comment on your journal... hmmph...

This is a cool idea and in theory I will join you in this quest. In practice though, it may take a fair chunk of my allotted time to come up with 101 things I want to do, as I am not blessed with very much direction in life!. Will muse on it this week though and see what I can come up with.

FWIW it took me a week to come up with the list, and that was with copious appropriation of others' goals.

I really love this idea, I might have to have a go. :) I like some of your ideas, I hope it's ok if I use some of them? I have lots of ideas for stuff I want to do anyway.

I'm learning to knit already - using "Stitch and Bitch" - I highly recommend it! It has some nice jumpers for guys in it, which might be a good goal if you want to knit something. :)

good luck with getting that list finished

i get the feeling i keep on avoiding things that need doing (more along the lines of fixing my various broken computers, and clearing accumulated junk out of my room), and a list like this might help

but then again, i'd probably forget to look at the list :)

I was utterly scared of flying until Nov 2000. I just came back from my 2nd US trip and I adore it up there.... take-off is also much fun if you can relax enough. Honest ;)

I very much recommend this book which helped me not panic when I was pretty much forced to fly for the first time : http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1854878646/202-9125767-4526217

If you'd like to talk more about this, ask Matthew to give you my email address/ICQ number. Good luck!

Whereas I'm too scared to get on a motorbike! ;-)

Its not so much planes that scare me - its the sheer height! I have never really had a fear of 'flying' as such, but being on a small plane with that huge drop beneath me is a bit of a problem. Bridges are the worst though! Having said all this - that is me in the picture jumping out of aplane at 12,000ft. I thought it would cure me. No such luck!

How about a asky dive on a bike out of a plane? hat might cure both our fears in one?!!

Happy to talk German with you (I stopped having German tutorials and switched to French, so don't want to forget German). Feel free to try signing or German at me any time - although my sign is around level 1, though the German is pretty fluent.
