I've received a few emails about my lack of updates, so I guess I ought to let people know what's been going on with my life.

Thursday: woke up feeling a bit rough, but made it into work. Around midday I was sent home, and went straight to bed. I woke up around 10am on Friday morning.

Friday: got the train up to Leicester for the bi activists weekend. Was met at the station and had a lovely dinner at G. and E's place.

On Saturday evening I went to a Ceillidh, which was fabulous fun. It was a very unusual group of people - most events I go to either have a skewed age distribution centered on 20-30 or are faily normal. This seemed to be an inverted normal distribution - there seemed to be very few of my own age. I enjoyed it a lot, but it was a little shaming to see 15 year olds who were so very much more skilled than me.

On Sunday morning I went along to the cathedral to join in with the service ringing. A lovely light 12, and I'll probably go back at some point.

Was hoping to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] dagonet over the weekend, but he was unfortunately working when I was available. All in all it was a good weekend, productive without being exhausting, and I even came away with a couple of projects to work on.

Mainly for G, but useful for other people who might choose to stay in Leicester: The hotel I stayed in (The Mitchell Hotel) was adequate and quiet, but seemed slightly understaffed because I occasionally found myself waiting for someone to appear (e.g. when checking out and ordering breakfast). Bus routes into town are good though.

LESBIANS!

Now that I've got your attention, this was the shout which emanated from behind us as [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug and I walked arm-in-arm out of Kings Cross station on our way to [livejournal.com profile] bmovie last night. It was only after we'd taken half a dozen steps that I worked out not only what had been said, but also that it was directed at us.

That's right, folks. Someone thought I was a lesbian.

It's perhaps a little understandable because I was in my long black coat which looks a little like a corset from the back due to the lacing.

[livejournal.com profile] bmovie itself was its usual vibrant self and it was great to catch up with the many people that I'd not seen for far too long.

Today was [livejournal.com profile] polyday and though we didn't make it there until midday it was a fab day. In the afternoon we played a few games of Fluxx and wandered off with [livejournal.com profile] flirtydaz to the south bank to go on the London eye. We'd been queueing for something in the order of 20 minutes and were about half way round when the bulding was evacuated. I suspect this was due to a bomb scare, but due to apathy we didn't hang around long enough to ascertain exactly why.

Whilst on this train of thought, I came up with the perhaps Draconian idea that leaving one's bags unattended should be a criminal offence. I hesitate because I don't quite agree with punishing forgetfulness, but I think that people would take more care if it were a crime. At the very least it might help recoup some of the losses. What do people think?

We wandered back via a cafe type place and got a bite to eat, but left due to fatigue around 1930-2000.

Sorry to those of you with whom I didn't get much of a chance to speak. I count myself lucky that I have such a large and friendly community in which there isn't the time to catch up with everyone.

Friday morning, though I booked it off work, I got bored and installed Nagios on the work servers so that we can be alerted when stuff goes wrong.

Got a train up to Manchester and headed back to [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug's place where we got pizza and watched Phenomenan.

Saturday headed into town for BiFest, which was fab. Was great to meet up with people who I don't get to see very often. I miss Manchester loads, having spent almost a third of my life there, though I love London too. A weekend doesn't seem long enough - I may spend new year there if I don't move into another place here in London (if I do then I'll most likely host a party myself). Introduced a few people to the wonders of the game Set.

Sunday: went into town again and met up with [livejournal.com profile] phuturatica and was introduced to Suburb - lovely place, and cheap too. Randomly saw Chris. Stayed there much of the afternoon and headed to Moon Under Water for food, only to find out they'd sold out of most dishes. Still had a fab meal and left for the train shortly before 2000. It would've been a 2 hour journey, getting me home for 2230 ish, though my train was cancelled so I had to do it in two stages changing at Birmingham. I got home at 0130 ish, later by than the original journey would have taken.

Didn't have the energy to do anything other than sleep, so flopped into bed.

BiCon 2006

Wow. A fantastic weekend. The team did us all proud.

Workshops attended: relaunch of bi.org, third gender, transgender and sexuality, anonymous confessions, snog in, coming out and staying in at work, cover bis, future bicons, BSL/Deaf awareness.

Much debauchery was had, and quite a lot of drinking compared to my own usual levels. Bi snog-in was an achievement - huge kudos to [livejournal.com profile] bethanthepurple for organising it. Only got one comment from Other People, but didn't hear what they said due to getting carried away :-)

Highlights of the weekend were the Ceillidh and the picnic on the lawn on Sunday night.

Flat Cunt Monkey II was ace - consisiting of me, [livejournal.com profile] softfruit, [livejournal.com profile] glamcarnation, [livejournal.com profile] angeoverhere, [livejournal.com profile] johnnydefective, [livejournal.com profile] heiroglyphe, [livejournal.com profile] rainbowqueen, [livejournal.com profile] loopy_lorna and [livejournal.com profile] beadqueen.

It came to leaving time and I was a little dispondant that I would be the only one from BiCon on my particular train, though discovered mid-afternoon in the bar that C. would be on the same one so we had a chance to get to know one another and snuggle a little. Sorry it'd taken 3 years. Though in a way it's good that our community is so huge that we can't get to know everyone immediately.

The closing plenary is always a moving time as people say their thanks and the team are thanked and people are given awards. In particular, [livejournal.com profile] djm4's acceptance speech was very moving, containing the quote
Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one. - Jane Howard
It really hit home and made me weepy, though tears of joy :-)

BiCon comedown has been fairly minimal compared to 2002, though I do have a followup post to make at some stage.

Clicky - flash animation. Not worksafe in the least. Catchy melody though.

*luffs* to new friends.

Friday: head to Manchester afternoon sometime. Meet up with [livejournal.com profile] softfruit to see The Manchester Passion, an event I saw whilst casually reading [livejournal.com profile] manchester.
Evening - t.b.c.. Probably involving dinner of somekind with [livejournal.com profile] trebor.

Saturday/Sunday: daytime is another Bi Actvist's weekend. Saturday evening will most likely be a soiree chez [livejournal.com profile] angeoverhere.

Sunday evening: undecided.

Monday: Morning undecided. Late afternoon: pub with random MancGoffs. Evening: undecided.

Tuesday: Morning undecided, though my train leaves at mid-day.

Random question directed at the geeks, but with possible amusement factor for all: What naming schemes have you encountered for computers?
At uni there were a couple of clusters I used with regularity. One room's machines were named after Carry On films - "Upthekybher" being one. At first that particular one confused me because when I first used that machine I'd neither heard of that film, nor ascertained the naming scheme. (I thought maybe it could be a double entendre, but then thought it not likely in a Uni environment). Another cluster had celestial bodies (planets, stars, etc.). At home I use album names from a particular artist, though the small scope doesn't limit me as I have only a handful of machines.

My fridge smells of dill.
