LESBIANS!

Now that I've got your attention, this was the shout which emanated from behind us as [livejournal.com profile] xugglybug and I walked arm-in-arm out of Kings Cross station on our way to [livejournal.com profile] bmovie last night. It was only after we'd taken half a dozen steps that I worked out not only what had been said, but also that it was directed at us.

That's right, folks. Someone thought I was a lesbian.

It's perhaps a little understandable because I was in my long black coat which looks a little like a corset from the back due to the lacing.

[livejournal.com profile] bmovie itself was its usual vibrant self and it was great to catch up with the many people that I'd not seen for far too long.

* * *

Today was [livejournal.com profile] polyday and though we didn't make it there until midday it was a fab day. In the afternoon we played a few games of Fluxx and wandered off with [livejournal.com profile] flirtydaz to the south bank to go on the London eye. We'd been queueing for something in the order of 20 minutes and were about half way round when the bulding was evacuated. I suspect this was due to a bomb scare, but due to apathy we didn't hang around long enough to ascertain exactly why.

Whilst on this train of thought, I came up with the perhaps Draconian idea that leaving one's bags unattended should be a criminal offence. I hesitate because I don't quite agree with punishing forgetfulness, but I think that people would take more care if it were a crime. At the very least it might help recoup some of the losses. What do people think?

We wandered back via a cafe type place and got a bite to eat, but left due to fatigue around 1930-2000.

Sorry to those of you with whom I didn't get much of a chance to speak. I count myself lucky that I have such a large and friendly community in which there isn't the time to catch up with everyone.

Littering

An Essex man who threw chips out of his car window has received fines for littering from two councils because they fell across both districts.

FWIW, I think that being charged twice was correct; he did, after all, commit a number of offences. Admittedly it's nowhere near the same scale, but I'd expect a double murder to be two charges rather than one.

Last Thursday saw the fantastic Lilith Vile play in the Witchwood. This was a fantastic gig, and I was glad to have finally made it to that venue after hearing so much about it. The music was fabulous; I'd only ever previously heard solo demos, so the sounds were a lot richer than I'd previously heard.

In geek news, I see LiveJournal have now enabled tagging of entries. I've gone through my journal and tagged everything from mid 2002 onwards. Got bored though - shall do the rest some other time.

Hmm. Coming up to the end of June already. It'll be my birthday before I know it. (July 24th) I've no plans so far - is anyone interested in doing something? I'm completely open to suggestions: an event in Manchester, in London, Berlin or somewhere else? It'll be sometime over the nearest weekend rather than the day itself

You stupid moaning bint. Why not try going shopping WHEN THEY'RE ACTUALLY OPEN? ahem

I'm working in Aberdeen on Wednesday and Thursday, and in Southampton on Friday. At least I'm flying to Aberdeen - otherwise I think the drive would have killed me.

Just got back from week 3 out of 4 for this RT course I'm on for flying. It's been going very well and the exam is next week.

Who Should You Vote For?

Who should I vote for?

Your expected outcome:

Liberal Democrat

Your actual outcome:

Labour -11
Conservative -28
Liberal Democrat 32
UK Independence Party -7
Green 11

You should vote: Liberal Democrat

The LibDems take a strong stand against tax cuts and a strong one in favour of public services: they would make long-term residential care for the elderly free across the UK, and scrap university tuition fees. They are in favour of a ban on smoking in public places, but would relax laws on cannabis. They propose to change vehicle taxation to be based on usage rather than ownership.

Take the test at Who Should You Vote For

Whilst on the subject of politics, I had a conversation recently which concerned me a little. (I'll not name the subject to protect identity but feel free to speak up if you read this and want to make yourself known). Basically, this person had decided not to vote with the justification that the parties were all as bad as each other, and no one party stood out well enough to warrant a vote. Part of the conversation went something like:

Me) Would you vote if there was a RON option?
X) Yes
Me) Have you written to your MP to state that much, asking if they're going to campaign for that or some other way to register dissatisfaction with all candidates
X) I don't even know who my MP is
Me) *stunned silence* It's Anne Coffey.

I'm trying to place why I felt surprised. Maybe because someone who has political awareness and seems to have at least some strong views
(OK, so you won't know who I'm talking about here, but bear with me)
hasn't found a political affilliation. Perhaps it's because I view a non-vote as wasted. I don't know.

[livejournal.com profile] sofrfruit and I spoke earlier this evening about this and explained a few things I didn't know about. Instead of spoiling a ballot paper e.g. by marking each possible vote (which is the only solution I had previously known of), you can scrawl a message such as "Re-open nominations" on the paper. This is because non-standard votes are examined by all sides to see if they can argue that is should go on to their own party, or shouldn't go to that of an opponent. This also means that those who do have a party in mind can also elect to vote for that party and also write such a message without the paper being treated as spoiled. I've now decided to do this, because though I'm in favour of a RON option (or better still STV), I'm not happy enough to sacrifice my vote to that effect.

To the (I suspect) few of you who weren't planning on voting in the forthcoming UK general election (assuming you're eligible to), what are your reason(s)?
