Christmas party, ringing
Dec. 13th, 2007 12:17 amFriday was the work Christmas party. People were getting very drunk; I left the time that people started doing lapdances for each other! I didn't take any photos, but I know there are some somewhere. (None of me, I'm glad to say). I went to Aldgate to go bellringing to hide from the debauchery.
Saturday:
Afternoon I went ringing at Westminster. I don't often get nervous when ringing, but the prestige of them is enough to unsettle me a little.
Last in the evening I went round to see
snork_maiden who I'd not seen for far too long and we headed out to spiral scratch. A great little place, in a pub just off Charing Cross road. I keep forgetting when it's on, but have enjoyed it each time I've gone.
Sunday:
A day I'll not forget for a long time. It was the first Sunday service ringing at Edgware since I started training the band. Such a proud moment, and it went really well.
In the afternoon there was more bellringing at Hackney and Islington, and then I went back to Hackney for drinks in the Pembury Tavern. A fantastic evening, and was great to catch up with people (especially those like
missyk8 who I'd not seen for ages). Got the bus to KX with S. and even arrived in time for the last tube home \o/

Nov. 5th, 2007 08:59 amForgot to say in my last entry. Thank you for asking about me after my mini hiatus. This weekend was pretty mad. I miss the hedonism, in a way.
Friday night started off with the carter usm gig, and it was great to see
nearlyeveryone there.
There were 2 songs I couldn't identify. I'll update with the setlist later.
I was really quite disappointed that they didn't play anything from the world without dave album.
Like many of us, I strongly link music to past periods and events. Carter usm remind me very much of the mid 90s, as that's when I got into them. (sadly the tail end of their career, until this comeback, but I did get to see them twice). That's the time when I was partyway through college and beginning to form social circles. There were a couple of notable exeptions, but I generally didn't enjoy school and came away with very few friends. I don't associate it in a lamentful way, but more the liberation that college allowed me to make.
Later that evening a few of us decamped to south london for the housewarming party. This was excellent fun, even if I did only get less than 4 hours sleep, from 5am :-) woke up at 9 from the corner in whbich I'd crashed and carried on partying.
Left at 2pm, headed home, changed, ate, and headed out again. Stay beautiful was the event in question. To the indie kids on my flist, I must take you along sometime. Admittedly I was too tired to enjoy it fully but it was still a great night nonetheless.
(thank you cybermuppet for providing such an "entertaining" sideshow ;-) got home at 4am. The walk home from the bus stop was bizarre, but typical of the saturday closest to bonfire night: smoke hanging in the air, smell of spent explosives and the occasional bit of debris.
Sunday: woke up at 10 and decided that I was too tired to make it to church for sunday ringing. Went back to sleep again and woke at midday. Later in the afternoon I went out for nye's unbirthday party at pendrel's oak in holborn. Was a quiet fun afternoon spent chatting and playing games.
Got back home around 10 and caught up with people online.

italian food, work drinks
Nov. 2nd, 2007 08:51 amUgh. So this going-to-bed-earlier lark didn't work out well. Not that I haven't enjoyed myself - far from it - just that I'm struggling with the lack of sleep. It doesn't seem all that long ago when I use to regularly get by on 4-5 hours a night with the occasional 6-7 catchup. Now it seems to be a 7-8 with a slightly less common 9-10 catchup.
Anyway, so what've I been up to this week? (I've been asked about my mini hiatus from writing in my journal by more than one person. It's hugely flattering to know you're that interested in my blatherings. I've made notes of what i've been up to but am waiting for when I have time compose a worthwhile entry.)
Tuesday night I went to
Marine Ices
And then to a bar with
Bluehelen.
Was great to catch up without having to fight the bustle that is typical of our usual mutual haunts such as
Bmovie.
Wednesday wasn't awful, it just didn't turn out the way I had intended. By way of preamble, a friend has done a load of resoration work on a church in the city of london. It's not as well known as one might thought, considering how well-known is a song in which it appears. These bells haven't been in a functional condititon for over 100 years. They now are, and I've rung at a couple of services there during the week when I worked next to
The gherkin
This friday is a fundraising launch party and publicity event, and I was going to help set up equipment there. The spanner in the works (pun not intended, but left in for good measure) was that the trailer which was going to be used to transport things over was blocked in by an unknown vehicle. I had reached the church and was waiting for a while so again it was very late when I got home.
Last night I went out with colleagues from work. There were 2 departments (loosely speakingcustomer servies and tech), and it was good to finally meet some of the people I'd seen on the internal ticketing system. (the two depts are at different offices)
Ended up staying out very late, but still managed to get the last tube home. Once again it was a noisy bar and I was struggling to hear at times, particularly toward the end of the night when I was tiring so coping even less well.
Given loud enough background noise am sure even fully hearing people would struggle to hear, but though my hearing (as far as I know) is normal, based upon the facility with which most of my peers conduct conversation in noisy atmospheres I seem to struggle more than most. Having spoken to deaf people about it, I've heard occasional mention of cognitive deafness.
I don't know if any such tests exist, but that's pretty much what it feels like. I find it so tiring as I concentrate so hard and people sometimes mistake the resulting facial expression for aggression.
Towards the end of the night I spent it talking to one person who pointed out that I was "on edge". His english was easily converasational, but I think I would have struggled to explain the above. There's a story i've started using because it's easier to explain in noisy circumstances, that I fell asleep next to a bass canon in a club a few years ago. After that he took much more care to speak clearly. I know it's perhaps missing the hugedifferences between the two types (well, ok there are many more) of deafness, but in loud situations I rarely have the ability to explain.
I was intending this post to be a short one. Oops.
Back to the grindstone for today, carter usm gig this evening (and having heard through the grapevine, I know loads of the people going), then to katie and Zeke's housewarming.

Cette semaine
Oct. 5th, 2007 09:24 amI was going to make this a bah/yay post, but I don't quite have on the bah side. Not that I'm complaining.
This week's annoyances:
mutt seems to segfault if an IMAP folder changes whilst mutt is accessing it.
Network card on my laptop has died. I suppose it's time I bought a faster machine anyway.
XSLT's variables aren't, uh, variable. You can assign them once but not thereafter. I have yet to find a workaround for my problem hindered by this.
On Wednes day when walking home I passed an art gallery and saw a fantastic photo in the window. I considered buying it as I quite like contemporary artwork so made notes and phoned the gallery to check the price. It was > 50x what I'm prepared to pay. I could barely contain my horror when calling. Shame, really.
Good stuff:
On Monday I had lunch with
snork_maiden. Was great for a catchup, but not quite long enough. I'm still interested in these knitting socials, so if you let me know which ones you're likely to attend I'll see what I can arrange.
On Tuesday I had dinner with my mum. AS well as a social catchup, she was visiting in order to discuss what I want in the way of curtains. A couple of the blinds in the house are a bit flaky and I think curtains look nicer anyway. Curtain-making is something she enjoy and is good at so I invited her to make a set.
On Wednesday I at bellringing in Hampstead, I taught an accomplished ringer elementary conducting, something he'd previously been reticent to do. It went well, both times. BBPx3 for 108 PBM for those who care.
Last night I finished one of the gloves I was knitting, and though it's small, it's not too small for me. I think I'll make the other one to match so that if/as/when I'm bothered to make a slightly larger pair, I'll have a matched pair to give away. I'd like to do that anyway, as it's fun to make stuff for others. (I made a striped version of the hat for a colleague about a week ago)
Aldgate ringing tonight, but I'm tired. Hopefully I'll perk up. I need to be more disciplined in getting to bed earlier. Please help me to do this.
Stay Beautiful this Saturday. Can I tempt anyone to come along?

The fact I couldn't go to the science festival in York actually worked in my favour. On a mailing list of which I'm a member, one of the other subscribers wrote about a Python conference in Birmingham. It took place over the weekend when the science festival started, so I was able to go to that instead. I go the train up on Friday and stayed with
bethanthepurple - t'was fab to see you and catch up.
Organisation-wise, having been to other cons in the past, two things of note stand out, and they may be of interest to other con-goers/organisers. 1) double sided name badges. (when on a string they tend to flap about and sometimes turn over) 2) lightning talks. These take the form of a long slot in the timetable for several speakers to have a 5 minute slot in which to make a short presentation, have a rant, whatever.
Reading over this post I realised that when I say going to this event instead worked in my favour, I missed out why. I ran a lightning talk of my own, on the subject of genetic algorithms. I ran out of time, annoying so was cut short at the 5 minute point. That said, I quite enjoyed doing it, and aroused some interest because a number of people spoke to me about it afterwards.
Interestingly someone else had written a python suite for GA stuff, though his app was to solve the timetabling problem.
I might re-run that as a longer talk at the London Python group. Ideally I'd like to record it and put it online because it's qute an academic subject and I'd like to make it a bit more approachable. If not at London Python then I'll record it myself.
It's odd - having done training in previous jobs, and teaching the Edgware band to ring, i'm still very nervous when doing the standup and talk style of teaching. Ì might book myself on a course, because it will be useful even though I don't do a lot at the moment.

Today I'm off to Edgware, Stanmore and Elstree on a ringing outing. Looking forward to this as it's the first big association event I'll be attending since starting to teach the new folk from the start of the year. It's doubly exciting as until I came along, the bells hadn't been rung regularly for about 30 years. It'll be a good opportunity to forge links with other people in the district. Hmm. I should eat and head out - I need to be at Edgware at 3pm.
Housey stuff: Had a wasp person in on Thursday. I think that bees/wasps are one of my only phobias. I used to be sligtly uneasy around dogs, but that seems to have subsided in recent years. Chimney repair guy isn't coming today, and will come on Monday instead.
Heading to Wales for Bicon on Thursday! Rar. I so need this break. Plus it'll be a great opportunity to catch up with people that I've not seen for far too long.
A work machine has died, and annoyingly it can't be fixed remotely. Thankfully it can wait until I get back this evening, though it'll mean heading all the way into town, a few minutes work there (I hope) and then trek all the way back.
Friday/Saturday
Jul. 2nd, 2007 01:46 amOn Friday night I went to
darkgoddesskim's birthday party. Such a fabulous place, dear, I hope you stay for a while. Was also good to catch up with
ruth_sedina — thanks for the knitting pattern.
( knitting pattern for a hat beneath )
Saturday was the Pride march. Was good fun, but also very wet. Finished off with drinks in The Chandos.

Visiting Manchester
Jun. 21st, 2007 09:08 pmI'm somewhat tired having been doing work on my personal website for the past few hours. I should head off home and eat, I guess :-)
I'm heading up to Manchester tomorrow night, returning to London on Sunday evening. Saturday I'll be at a reunion so unavailable, but other than that I'm free. Who wants to meet up? (If after Friday then best to phone/use SMS as I can't guarantee Interwebnet access)
*luffs to all*

Zweiten mal in einem Tag: Culture
Mar. 6th, 2007 01:52 pmI'm not talking about mouldy yoghurt.
On Sunday I went to the British Library to see the gallery on London maps. It was a huge queue - almost an hour of waiting. Sadly I was too tired to take much of it in, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Despite previous woes about getting tickets, I've managed to find a pair for Placebo tomorrow night. *fingers crossed* that they arrive in time. I'm so looking forward to that - it made my day yesterday evening when I won the ebay auction. I was so excited that I had to share it with the person to whom I was offering support on the phone :-)
Next Tuesday and Thursday, Ig Nobel are offering a couple of London lectures. I'm going with a colleague to the one on Tuesday. Anyone else fancy joining us? Tickets are free. For those not in London, there are a few other dates/places linked on that page.
Heute Abend geh' Ich bei Deutschclub.
Next saturday will bring a new experience. I shall probably document that after it happens.

Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough
Nov. 25th, 2006 08:25 pmToday:
Today was the 100th anniversary (to the day) after the baptism of St John Betjeman, Poet Laureate from 1972. It was from his poem Slough whence the subject of this post comes. St Anne's in Highgate was one of his favourite churches, and to commemorate there was a special service with ringing afterwards.
Then I went to Archway Cat Shelter with one of the other rings who was a cat lover. I spent almost 2 hours there and provisionally picked a couple for the house. I let the people know there that it would be dependent on the move happening as planned (a post about that to come, probably tomorrow). As fate would have it, when I called
immiscibility to tell her the news and of my choice, she mentioned she would have gone for those cats too, so *fingers crossed*
Tomorrow:
A few days ago
mrk told me about an exciting opportunity near my house-to-be. There's a nearby church with bells and a gorup of willing learners, but noone to teach them. They're looking for someone, and I've been volunteered (I don't mind this - it's something I'd actively like to do - see item 81 ). My reason for mentioning this is that tomorrow is the demonstration, just to maintain enthusiasm and let them know what it's all about.
bluehelen's housewarming, and if circumstances permit, to sort out the 'Net access there.
I just found a bug in either my journal style, or part of the public one - tags are not shown on the preview page. I shall hunt it down and squish it later; it's been far too long since I last poked the LiveJournal internals.</geek>

New years eve party
Oct. 16th, 2006 11:56 amI know it's a long way ahead, but I'm planning to host a new year party at the House in Burnt Oak, assuming it's all ready in time. Current indications are that there are no problems.
Crash space can be provided and I'm hoping to have about a dozen guests total, for which I'll most likely cook food. Assuming the plan comes together as we intend, it will be me,
_lexx and
cyberpunkgrrl as your hosts in residence. Who'd like to come? Who wants crash space? Post a link to your eating habits etc.
In order to complete another task on my 101 in 1001 list, I'd like to have it as a themed party. After brief conversations in the pub, the suggestions so far are: "Come as you aren't" (i.e. something that you would not normally wear) and "something beginning with the first letter of your name". Any better ideas?
_lexx and
cyberpunkgrrl: feel free to repost this invite in your own journals if you wish

Now that I've got your attention, this was the shout which emanated from behind us as
xugglybug and I walked arm-in-arm out of Kings Cross station on our way to
bmovie last night. It was only after we'd taken half a dozen steps that I worked out not only what had been said, but also that it was directed at us.
That's right, folks. Someone thought I was a lesbian.
It's perhaps a little understandable because I was in my long black coat which looks a little like a corset from the back due to the lacing.
bmovie itself was its usual vibrant self and it was great to catch up with the many people that I'd not seen for far too long.
polyday and though we didn't make it there until midday it was a fab day. In the afternoon we played a few games of Fluxx and wandered off with
flirtydaz to the south bank to go on the London eye. We'd been queueing for something in the order of 20 minutes and were about half way round when the bulding was evacuated. I suspect this was due to a bomb scare, but due to apathy we didn't hang around long enough to ascertain exactly why.
Whilst on this train of thought, I came up with the perhaps Draconian idea that leaving one's bags unattended should be a criminal offence. I hesitate because I don't quite agree with punishing forgetfulness, but I think that people would take more care if it were a crime. At the very least it might help recoup some of the losses. What do people think?
We wandered back via a cafe type place and got a bite to eat, but left due to fatigue around 1930-2000.
Sorry to those of you with whom I didn't get much of a chance to speak. I count myself lucky that I have such a large and friendly community in which there isn't the time to catch up with everyone.

That's right, folks. Someone thought I was a lesbian.
It's perhaps a little understandable because I was in my long black coat which looks a little like a corset from the back due to the lacing.

Quick update
Oct. 3rd, 2006 09:46 amBusy at work, so I'll be brief. I saw the house yesterday and loved it. Loads of potential . I've put an offer in and am waiting to hear back from the agent. as I type this I get a text message from the vendor accepting the offer.
I'm moving to Burnt Oak.
*fingers crossed* for a pre-Christmas completion.
Going to the Tech Pub Crawl tonight.
_lexx: Shit, sorry, I left the phone at home so meeting up in town won't be an option. Catch up with you on IRC later this evening?

Oct. 2nd, 2006 12:44 pmFriday:
Went out drinking in Printworks with some non-LJers Russ and Matt (who stayed in the same halls as me at uni) and other fellow Linux geeks. It started off quiet, but by 8 or 9 it was actually had music bleating out at a stupid volume. Depsite this place being chosen because it was a Wetherspoons, we since discovered that it is part of the Lloyd's chain. I'm wondering how long after the smoking ban comes into effect that bar workers will start asking for music to be lowered, lest their hearing be damaged. It's not the fact that it was music I didn't like (I'd object if it was music that I did at such a volume, because it makes group conversation impossible, and one-on-one conversation almost impossible), but also that it was needlessly loud, and too loud for the equipment - I could hear the sound distorting.
We sought refuge down the road to the nearby Sir John Oldcastle and had a fab night. I might even have found a place to live as one of the people present is selling their place in Burnt Oak in order to move to Japan. It's a little further out than I'd like, but not a complete deal breaker.
Saturday:
Went ringing for a wedding at St. Bartholemew the Great in Smithfields. I since learned that this is the oldest Anglican church in the country not to have had strucural work done on it. The bells are also the oldest peal in the country, offically dating from 1510. On top of that, it is the fourth church to appear in the film Four Weddings and A Funeral :-)
Evening was a fabulous meal in Mildred's in Soho. FOr such an avid carnivore, I really enjoyed the meals put on by a vegetarian restaurant. We were in the function room upstairs as there were a large number of us. Best thing was the "interesting" artwork on the walls. I wonder if anyone got any photos. I forgot, annoyingly. Pondered going to a house party afterwards, but decided against it due to having a headache.
I got home and worked out the probable cause - I'd not had any caffeine that day. Oops. Maybe I should take this as a hint to cut down.
Sunday:
No morning ringing, so I had a well needed lie-in. Instead we rang a quarter peal for evensong, thus completing 79. Ring a quarter peal on my 101 in 1001 list. 3 parts of Parker's 12-part Grandsire Triples, for those who care, of which I suspect there'll be 3.
Today:
Stupidly busy at work - it's not suprising I feel I'm nearing burnout at times. This evening I'm viewing the house in Burnt Oak. *fingers crossed* Well, later, otherwise I won't be able to type very well:-)

Rar. Fab weekend
Sep. 25th, 2006 09:40 pmFriday morning, though I booked it off work, I got bored and installed Nagios on the work servers so that we can be alerted when stuff goes wrong.
Got a train up to Manchester and headed back to
xugglybug's place where we got pizza and watched Phenomenan.
Saturday headed into town for BiFest, which was fab. Was great to meet up with people who I don't get to see very often. I miss Manchester loads, having spent almost a third of my life there, though I love London too. A weekend doesn't seem long enough - I may spend new year there if I don't move into another place here in London (if I do then I'll most likely host a party myself). Introduced a few people to the wonders of the game Set.
Sunday: went into town again and met up with
phuturatica and was introduced to Suburb - lovely place, and cheap too. Randomly saw Chris. Stayed there much of the afternoon and headed to Moon Under Water for food, only to find out they'd sold out of most dishes. Still had a fab meal and left for the train shortly before 2000. It would've been a 2 hour journey, getting me home for 2230 ish, though my train was cancelled so I had to do it in two stages changing at Birmingham. I got home at 0130 ish, later by than the original journey would have taken.
Didn't have the energy to do anything other than sleep, so flopped into bed.

Social plans for this evening
Aug. 19th, 2006 03:15 pmMeeting up at 6pm in Camden with
cyberpunkgrrl and anyone else who wants to join us. We'll be heading to the Miso noodle bar (Junction of Camden Road/Hawley Cresc., near the Dev).
Later on for 10pm I'm intending to head over to The Intrepid Fox for some pre-club drinkies, and possibly going to Decadence. That depends on energy levels though.
Anyone fancy coming along to any or all of that?

My weekend
Jun. 25th, 2006 07:03 pmThursday's pub meet was most entertaining.
poggs and I (and possibly a third person) were coming up with amusing ways to annoy webdevelopers with data mangling. We came up with mod_mangle, an Apache module to close a few random tags when a page is served and also a firmware patch for routers to put in random semi-colons and braces in javascript. Geeks, eh? :-)
Clearing air over less-than-perfect past events is so liberating. (Thanks - you know who you are.)
Saturday: Afternoon was another picnic by the lock on the canal in Camden.
nearly_everyone was there - too many to mention. I also got a haircut. Sorry,
bluehelen and
stephmog. Had a late meal in the Ice Wharf and then headed back to the Dev. There I learned to play Duell (wikipedia article that I wrote explaining it), a dice game which looks quite interesting, and I'd like to play a few more games. I'm getting a board made, so that'll be fun.
Didn't do much today apart from Laundry. Oh, whilst I think of it, the Sunday service bellringing was excellent. We had a few visitors from Cornwall so were able to do some advanced stuff and it went flawlessly. It's so rewarding when it goes well.

All quiet on the western front
Jun. 19th, 2006 01:27 pmOops. I seem not to have updated for several weeks. I am still alive and, for the most post, I have still been reading and commenting.
I'll drop in some backdated entries at some point, once I've finished writing them up as quite a lot has happened.
My new job is going well and I've been making a good impression, or so it seems. Mid last week I fixed a bug which had existed for about 2 years, but was well hidden and didn't occur very often, hence it remaining undiscovered for so long.
Whilst I'm on my lunch break and without copious free time, I'll write about last weekend.
Saturday was a wedding in the afternoon. I'd not rung for a wedding for a long time, and the London rates were a pleasant surprise :-) Paid for my night out, which was a pleasant chilled evening in the Dev making a detour via Wagamamamamamamama.
Once again discovered that it is a very small world, with
kittygoth knowing both
bitty and
martling.
Sunday I visited my Mum and had a belated birthday dinner with her in the form of a BBQ, thus completing item 44 (Have a barbecue) on my 101 in 1001 list.
