Last I meant to write about this at the time but have been doing so much that I've barely had time to read, let alone write.
Tuesday 20th October was 5040 days since I first caught hold of a rope for bellringing. The mathematicians (and/or ringers) amongst you will notice that this is 7!. For the rest of you, this value is the number of different arrangements of 7 bells, and a noteworthy target in bellringing to to ring each of them without repeating any, and to do so in one stretch without breaks. From start to finish, this feat takes about 3 hours.
So why did I mention that date in particular? I had never attempted a peal before, and thought this would be a fitting date on which to attempt it. I also invited the guy who taught me all those years ago.
We started off fine, but unfortunately the conductor noticed that a mistake had been made, about 2 hours in, and it was called to a halt. I was a bit upset at the time, although we did have some lovely ringing up to that point.
I would like to have another go at some point, although the significance of the date has now passed.

Date: 2009-11-08 10:12 pm (UTC)As you may recall, I turned down your invitation to join this attempt... because I, too, have never rung (or even attempted) a full peal yet and did not want to be the cause of yours going wrong on such a special occasion. If you want to try again at some point that is not a significant date, I would be happy to join you! I might be able to manage a peal of either Grandsire (on the treble, where I have done some quarter peals), or Plain Bob (on any bell you like).
Hope to see you soon, my friend!
