What were you doing when you heard, and what are you doing now?

Today I am at work.

In 2001 I was in bed, dozing when I heard, having just worked the night shift before. I got a text message from my ex saying "Have you heard the news?". I thought nothing of it (assuming it was related to someone in our social circle) and went back to bed, only to receive another text 20 minutes later from someone in another social group. At that point I saw my computer screen and had left it logged in to a talker. The message posting rate had skyrocketed, so I started reading and found out that way.

I didn't find out until about 4pm GMT, on my way back from school, and I saw mum consoling one of our American friends and asked what has happened.

I was at work in Docklands watching everything on the big TV in the meeting room with the rest of my department. I don't think we did very much work that day.

In work, listening to it on the radio once the second tower was hit, and getting regular phonecalls from my then-partner and her housemates about how it looked on TV. Then round to theirs to watch it in moving colour once I was done in work.

I was at work when the news came through. There were emails flying about and glances being thrown around the room. People had dealings with people working in the towers (I worked in electronic banking). Someone in the department lost a relative, too. There were pictures flying about almost immediately.

Now, I'm sitting online at home and getting ready to go along to the local store for provisions.

I was on a train back to my Dad's place in Essex (this was before he'd met my step-mum, who he's now married to, which is quite wierd!) & I got a text from an actiovist friend of mine saying something like "Someone's flown a plane into the Twin Towers - looks like the couldn't find an airport" which i just ignored as i had no idea what he was on about!
I got there and started reading the paper and my Dad got a phonecall from his work and next thing i know he comes flying down the stiars shouting something about planes and the US and turns on the TV news channel and we just sat there watching it. It was really bizarre!

Today, I am working at City College Manchester, typing data.

Then, I was working for a military spares & repairs company, and everyone was standing around in a combination of bemusement and shock.

My ex-boyfriend told me on MSN. We were talking on it and he found out first. I then went downstairs and switched the TV on :) umm, but I was starting sixth form that year *wondering why I wasn't there*
Today I've just got in from Stockport College.

I was in bed and woke just waking up and I thought I heard my mum saying something about a llama being tied up outside the twin towers. I have no idea how I heard 'llama' but when I eventually sauntered out to the tv I found that it wasn't a *llama*, it was a plane. and it hadn't been *tied up*, but rather Flown In To the twin towers. I hadn't even heard of the twin towers at the time. I had no idea what the significance of them was. Later on in the day I went to my massage course then gave two of my friends a massage.

Today I bummed around, watched some tv, did some grocery shopping, sat at computer.

I also had never heard of the twin towers/WTC back then (although obviously I'd seen them on TV as part of the whole New York skyline...)

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Yet, I had never even seen them... or at least if I had they'd never really registered as anything! How much of a rock was I living under?

Iwas at home (my old uni home) and heard from a friend who was round the corner decorating. I went another friends house and drank whiskey.

Today I met up with friends and drank guiness in a pub.

I was a student at the time. A friend of mine phoned me up in the middle of the day saying 'have you seen the news?' and I said I hadn't so he said 'I think you'd better turn the TV on'. I didn't have a TV at the time so I turned the radio on and found out that way.

Funnily enough I am now a student again, though doing a totally different course.

Today I was working at the psychiatric hospital.

Then I was preparing for the new semester, buying flat-pack furniture in Hanley Argos for my friend's new house. Another friend got a "have you heard the news, get yourself to a TV" text. We thought something had happened in Chester where she came from. We stood in Argos watching the TVs with loads of other people. The sound was off so it wasn't very clear what had happened. It was before the towers fell down.

What kind of sick fucking sentiment is this Nye??!!! So you think the mass slaughter of innocent lives and the trauma that their families have to suffer, is something to laugh about do you.

Consider yourself de-friended, and DO NOT acknowledge me at the Bisexual underground tomorrow, if you are there. People who harbour these kinds of thoughts and feelings are no friends of mine!!

The issue here (at least for me,) is clear cut. MURDER IS WRONG!!!! whether it be in Iraq, South Africa, Britain, America or wherever. THERE CAN NEVER BE ANY JUSTIFICATION! (Euthanasia accepted, but that's a different story) no matter how noble you perceive your cause to be.

How anybody can watch hundreds of people jumping out of windows hundreds of feet in the air, because it is the only option left open to them, only to be smashed to smithereens on the ground below, and think it funny; and something to be enjoyed is quite frankly -- sick!!!

I've yet to understand what it is Nye finds amusing about the towers
falling,

As have I, though I think it's the kind of conversation I'd prefer to have offline, or at least in a real-time setting rather than sporadic LJ comments whilst I'm at work.

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] bethanthepurple last night, comments like these are not necessarily meant at face value. Some people deal with trauma with sarcasm, flippancy or faux humour. To cite an example, I don't remember the details, but a few months ago I was having lunch with the producer of the documentary and he said that in this interview upon being told I made some off-hand remark which they had to cut out, which is why that scene was very short.

I was shopping with [profile] spikeylady and [profile] buttonmeup in Leeds. It was a couple of weeks before I started working with the Inland Revenue.

And now, I'm at home, after a day still working for the civil service.

I was at work teaching. Not half an our ago, I'd given the students a lecture on switching off their mobile phones while in class, or at least have them on vibrate; only to have my mobile go off right in the middle of a lesson.

Rather hypocritically and unprofessionally I answered, and my mum told me what was going on. I finished early so i could go home and watch it on sky news.

I was browsing in charity shops in Pinner (NW London) when someone mentioned to someone else that a plane had hit the WTC. I did a little 'oh' to myself and thought it must have been an accident.

Then I met the driving instructor (I was in Pinner for a lesson) who the radio on and who had a relation who worked in one of the towers. I'm still not sure if they survived one way or another...

'Now' I'm at the home PC :) Yesterday, I was at work, where I don't get much chance to read LJ.
