Grey

At the beginning of last week I got a haircut whilst in Edinburgh. I known for a while that I've had a few grey hairs, mainly on my temples, but seeing as much grey hair as I did was a bit of a shock.

My dad still has all of his hair (notwithstanding occasions when he shaves it) and his dad kept most of his until he died, but both went grey relatively young. I seem to be going the same way. I'm not overly concerned, but am a little perturbed by it.

Nostalgia clicky

Greying hair is sexy.
Getting people with greying hair to agree with me has proved rather difficult.

Me - Oooh grey hair! Phworr!
Them - Nooo, don't point it out.
Me - But it really suits you.
Them - Where did I put my hat/hair dye/Trish-silencing device?

when mine goes grey I'm going to colour it in with one of those yellow highlighters and go out clubbing

Apologies and shuffles of feet for not being particularly serious in reply to your post

*blinks* For a moment, I thought Gordon Burns is your dad. ;o)

In my memory, my dad has always had salt&pepper hair (he's completely white now). Even on his wedding photograph he has grey temples (he was 30).

My first grey started to appear when I was about 6 or so, first a spot about the size of a 50p coin and growing steadily. Various dermatologists took samples of my scalp but couldn't explain the pigment loss. At age 12 (IIRC) I was told I could be completely white by the age of 20 (nice one to tell a 12-year-old, isn't it?). Luckily that didn't happen. The spot stopped growing eventually at about 6cm across. Nothing happened for a while and then from about age 25, the greys started falling out, creating the tonsure I now have.

I'm now 35 and of the hairs I still have, only a few are white which is only to be expected. I'm doing better than my dad in that regard but my dad really doesn't have a bald spot, just a widow's peak.

My mum's dad only had a few grey hairs when he died at the age of 75 but he only had a ring of hair around the back of his head left. I guess I'm heading somewhere between the two.

Unfortunately, I don't have any information on my dad's dad, as he was MIA in WWII.

What [livejournal.com profile] trishpiglet said (apart from the stuff about highlighters).

Grey hair is astonishingly sexy, esp. young 'uns. One of my LA chums has a whole grey/white patch (about 2 inches square) in the middle of his otherwise dark brown hair - mmmm.

I have recently discovered a lot of grey hair, too. I know my dad went grey quite early but not this early! Oh well, maybe it's more white than grey, I can't really tell... White hair is supposed to be sophisticated.

Offers sympathies. I've been going grey for at leaast 11 years now - my haor has been dyed almost consistently for a year or so, and I'm dreading letting it grow out...

Balding actually runs on the mom's side...so look at your mom's dad, does he still have hair?
