We took the train to Austria today. It's a bit more lively than Hungary and almost as cheap. Added bonus: I can speak the language (just).
Annoyingly, each time I've made the effort to ask people in German, they've responded in English. I admit that my accent is not perfect, and probably very English, and hence a give-away, but I made the effort, showing I'm at least semi-competent in the language, but I find it slightly patronising that they dont respond in German. If I noticed someone was struggling and I knew their mother tongue, then I'd consider repsonding in that language, but to do so as a matter of course seems a bit disrespectful of any effort being made.
Am I unreasonable here?
