I used to chronically bite my nails, and stopped (mostly) as a teenager. I found by looking after my nails, making sure they didn't get caught on stuff and often wearing wacky nailvarnish worked for me.
It may be worth investing in the clear nail protector stuff, as your nails may be quite structurally weak after so many years of biting. I still bite mine if I get stressed or they get too long and I don't have a suitable filing/cutting method to hand.
I strongly suspect I started biting my nails cos I hate hate hate the feeling that I get when they are suddenly cut. Biting them very low still feels odd, but it's a more stable stopping point for me. If I can resist nibbling on freshly cut nails for 24 hours I'm okay.
Oh and I have long nails on one hand (left) which I don't use much, and short nails on the right cos they just get snagged if I grow them too long. I also only usually wear nail varnish on one hand - cos I hate it on my right hand.
