Work update

Further to this: http://mattp.livejournal.com/267143.html

I quit my job today. I don't have a new job lined up. I am going to do something that I have been thinking about for ages - only now do I have the time to do it. I am going to complete training for my pilot's license. I don't wish to fly for a profession; it would be purely recreational. I told people at work this and they were generally supportive.

I have set myself a target of the end of the year. Yes, it was one of my 101 in 1001 tasks, but that kind of fell by the wayside somewhat. I haven't even made the summary post about that. bad matt.

I admit that it's a bit of a risk but I figured that keeping a license current is relatively easy; traing to e of the required standard in the first place is hard enough when I have a job. In a couple of years time I may not have this freedom. So I'm taking a calculated risk for an opportunity which may not present itself again.

Nervous, but excitedly so.

For reasons of professionalism, I protect my work-related posts from anyone with whom I work or have worked. But this one is different enough that I am making it open. I have screened comments though

Hier stell' Ich screiben weil Ich soll etwas essen.

Enjoy the skies! If you don't have work ties, will you be going abroad to learn?

I've been wanting to do this myself since 2000, but have not had the opportunity (i.e., the money and time have not been simultaneously available -- currently, neither is!). I congratulate you on this decision and hope to live vicariously through you! :-)

I also expect that you will be taking me up at some point! *grin*

I shall be, yes. My first request is from my sister - but she suffers from pteromechanophobia.

I want full updates of how you get on, with pictures please?

[identity profile] mattp.livejournal.com 2009-09-23 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
I did write about my previous efforts, but having just re-read over some of them they are rather scant on detail. I shall aim to be more verbose in my updates.

Good luck. Which license are you going for?

If you just want limited flying and less restrictions the NPPL is probably the way before, I think it is easy to keep up because the hours needed to keep it current are lower than the standard JAR-PPL, but of course it limits what you can fly.

I'm waiting (for the money) and the European Sport License to come, if it ever does, I'd love to fly but I don't see how I could ever afford the cost of a JAR-PPL.

Let us know how it goes anyhow Matt, I know some military pilots but I'd be interested in the views of someone doing it the civilian way.

I hope this works out well for you.

Getting a pilot's license was a dream of mine as a kid, until I realised how much numeracy was involved!

Very cool! Good luck with it :)

I would say that take the opportunities while you can, life is too short for regrets!

Unrelated: For some reason I'm amused over the length of time it took for us to become mutual LJ friends.

Unrelated to the unrelated comment: I still think it would be awesome if a person was signing BSL with one hand, ASL with another, and listening to morse code. Unfortunately I'm not that person and can't even do one of those things.

[identity profile] mattp.livejournal.com 2009-10-10 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression that i had friended you but that you didn't post much because I never saw entries appear. Then I saw a comment that you'd left and went looking.

Concurrent BSL and ASL would be nigh on impossible; it would have to be interlaced because both languages use two-handed signs (particularly BSL spelling)

I knew someone who could have a spoken conversation and also one in morse - at the same time.
